LEARN
We are very excited to announce the 2nd Annual Calgary Run for Water (10K run, 5K family-friendly walk/run) taking place at Eau Claire Market on Saturday, September 8th, 2012. Last year’s Run brought 816 runners of all ages together for an amazing day of fitness, fun and social awareness, and most importantly raised $50,000 for HOPE International Development Agency’s clean water projects in Southern Ethiopia – providing two villages clean water FOR LIFE!
The Cause
Every 15 seconds, a child under 12 dies of a water-borne disease. Clean water – or the absence of it – makes a fundamental difference in the quality of life for people in many ways. Communities with access to clean water not only enjoy better health, but also higher degrees of education, as children are able to attend school instead of spending their days walking long distances to retrieve water. Clean water provides immediate economic possibilities, as local water resources present opportunities for irrigation and growing sustainable crops. Through Calgary Run for Water, 100% of funds raised by individual participants will go directly to one of HOPE International Development Agency’s clean water projects in Southern Ethiopia.
The Goal
Calgary Run for Water organizers are very excited to partner with schools to raise awareness about global issues and the environment, and foster student citizenship.
What Your School Can Do
There are many opportunities for your school to get involved:
Host a School Assembly:
A Calgary Run for Water representative will lead an inspiring educational assembly that will include videos and demonstrations guaranteed to raise students’ awareness about the global clean water crisis.
Enhance your Curriculum:
Access free learning materials and resources (as well as dynamic guest speakers) which are linked to the Alberta curriculum for ease of integration into the classroom.
Host a School Mini-Run:
This is a terrific way to engage and inspire your student body in an educational way. A Calgary Run for Water representative will provide your school with event ideas, planning support, and participation at your event.
Challenge your Students to Train for a 5K Run:
Free summer ‘training’ program guidelines are available to get students physically active and ramped up for September’s big event. On-site prizes will be available for participating students on race day.
Have Fun Creating Fundraising Activities with your Students:
Promote values of sharing, giving and volunteering through fundraising projects. Fundraising ideas include competitions within/between classes, ‘bring-a-toonie day’, pledge form competitions, and many more.
